The House Advantage in Blackjack The house advantage, or house edge, is the percent of a player’s initial bet that the casino will expect to make in the long run. Flip it around, and it is the amount you would expect to lose. Blackjack Rules and the House Edge. Not surprisingly, different blackjack rules can have an impact on the size of the house edge. Some rules variations are beneficial to the player, while others increase the casino’s advantage. The following is a rundown of how different rule changes can affect the house advantage.
One of the main reasons gamblers enjoy playing blackjack so much is because of the low house edge available in the best games. Even the blackjack games with the largest house edge are still relatively low compared to other games and bets available in a casino.
The house edge in blackjack doesn’t matter to all players but it probably should. It’s a way to play longer and possibly have a winning session. What gambler doesn’t want that?
Understanding The House Edge
The house edge is the mathematical advantage the casino has in a game over time. The house edge is important for the casino and the player.
When the house edge is calculated the casino operator can estimate the amount of money they should win from the player over time. There will be ups and downs in the short term but the house edge will hold true over millions of games played.
Casino House Edge Blackjack Online
The house edge lets a player know if they’re playing a good, bad, or ugly game. The higher the house edge, the worse the chances of winning over time. The lower the house edge, the better the chance that the player can play longer and possibly hit a hot streak.
This doesn’t always mean a casino will make less from a low house edge game than a high house edge game. For example, more high rollers play baccarat since it’s a game with a very low house edge (1.06% on banker bet, 1.24% on player bet). Casinos often make more on baccarat than others because players risk more per game.
Games like 3 Card Poker and Let It Ride have a large house edge but fewer players and even fewer high rollers. Comparatively, those games don’t make as much money for the casino.
Blackjack is right in the middle. The number of blackjack players far outweighs every other game in the casino. There are also a good amount of blackjack players that are high rollers. Between the two there’s a lot of money for casinos to make from blackjack.
Finding The Best Blackjack House Edge
Casinos have been gradually changing the blackjack rules and increasing the house edge for years. Additionally, many casinos are offering blackjack games with different rules in different parts of the casino.
High limits rooms often have the blackjack games with the lowest house edge in a casino. High traffic areas like party pits often have blackjack games with the highest house edge. In between these two areas, there still might be multiple games with different blackjack rules.
Typically, blackjack games with the lowest limits have the highest house edge. This isn’t always the case but this happens frequently at the most popular casinos. For example, $10 blackjack on the Vegas Strip often pays 6:5 for a natural blackjack. That same minimum will pay 3:2 for a natural blackjack.
As you’ll see in a second, this is the most important thing for finding a blackjack game with a lower house edge.
House Edge For Different Blackjack Games
Here are a few things that affect the house edge of a blackjack game. Finding the most player-friendly rules should make the game more enjoyable.
- 3:2 vs. 6:5 payout for a natural blackjack: This rule has the largest impact on the house edge of a blackjack game. Playing a 6:5 blackjack will increase the house edge more than any other rule. Always try to play 3:2 blackjack if it’s in your budget.
- The number of decks: The house edge will increase the more cards in play. Play the game with the fewest decks as possible to keep the house edge lower. Most casinos have a double deck or shoe games with six or eight decks. If the rules and limits are the same, the double deck game is the better play.
- Splitting Pairs: New blackjack rules will sometimes limit when bettors can split cards in order to increase the house edge. Look for the following rules to lower the house edge – split on any two cards, double after splitting and resplit Aces. These are all separate rules. The house edge will be lower if more of these rules are available.
- Dealer Hits/Stands on 17: Most blackjack games today have the dealer hitting on soft 17. This increases the house edge. Dealer standing on 17 isn’t always available but check to see if it’s in your favorite casino. Every little bit helps.
- Surrender: This rule isn’t available in every casino but it’s another way to lower the house edge a little. Basic Strategy cards will inform bettors on when the optimal time to surrender.
Why Look For Low House Edge
There are two main reasons to play the blackjack game with the lowest house edge.
- Extend the length of play
- Make money
Playing a blackjack game with a low house edge doesn’t guarantee a bettor will make money. The blackjack games with a lower house edge should allow a gambler to play longer. The lower house edge should allow for fewer big downswings over time.
The combination can be gambling nirvana. Playing blackjack with a lower house edge should keep the player’s bankroll active for a longer period so they can hit a hot streak and possibly walk away as a winner.
Again, there’s no guarantee that a player will win a lower house edge game. However, playing a blackjack game with a lower house edge can extend play and give the player a better opportunity to make some money.
Introduction
The house edge is defined as the ratio of the average loss to the initial bet. In some games the beginning wager is not necessarily the ending wager. For example in blackjack, let it ride, and Caribbean stud poker, the player may increase their bet when the odds favor doing so. In these cases the additional money wagered is not figured into the denominator for the purpose of determining the house edge, thus increasing the measure of risk. For games like Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em and Crazy 4 Poker, where there are two required initial wagers, the house edge is based on one of them only. House edge figures are based on optimal or near-optimal player strategy.

Guide to House Edge
The reason that the house edge is relative to the original wager, not the average wager, is that it makes it easier for the player to estimate how much they will lose. For example if a player knows the house edge in blackjack is 0.6% he can assume that for every $10 wager original wager he makes he will lose 6 cents on the average. Most players are not going to know how much their average wager will be in games like blackjack relative to the original wager, thus any statistic based on the average wager would be difficult to apply to real life questions.
The conventional definition can be helpful for players determine how much it will cost them to play, given the information they already know. However the statistic is very biased as a measure of risk. In Caribbean stud poker, for example, the house edge is 5.22%, which is close to that of double zero roulette at 5.26%. However the ratio of average money lost to average money wagered in Caribbean stud is only 2.56%. The player only looking at the house edge may be indifferent between roulette and Caribbean stud poker, based only the house edge. If one wants to compare one game against another I believe it is better to look at the ratio of money lost to money wagered, which would show Caribbean stud poker to be a much better gamble than roulette.
Many other sources do not count ties in the house edge calculation, especially for the Don’t Pass bet in craps and the banker and player bets in baccarat. The rationale is that if a bet isn’t resolved then it should be ignored. I personally opt to include ties although I respect the other definition.
Element of Risk
For purposes of comparing one game to another I would like to propose a different measurement of risk, which I call the 'element of risk.' This measurement is defined as the average loss divided by total money bet. For bets in which the initial bet is always the final bet there would be no difference between this statistic and the house edge. Bets in which there is a difference are listed below.

Standard Deviation
The standard deviation is a measure of how volatile your bankroll will be playing a given game. This statistic is commonly used to calculate the probability that the end result of a session of a defined number of bets will be within certain bounds.
The standard deviation of the final result over n bets is the product of the standard deviation for one bet (see table) and the square root of the number of initial bets made in the session. This assumes that all bets made are of equal size. The probability that the session outcome will be within one standard deviation is 68.26%. The probability that the session outcome will be within two standard deviations is 95.46%. The probability that the session outcome will be within three standard deviations is 99.74%. The following table shows the probability that a session outcome will come within various numbers of standard deviations.
I realize that this explanation may not make much sense to someone who is not well versed in the basics of statistics. If this is the case I would recommend enriching yourself with a good introductory statistics book.

Hold
Although I do not mention hold percentages on my site the term is worth defining because it comes up a lot. The hold percentage is the ratio of chips the casino keeps to the total chips sold. This is generally measured over an entire shift. For example if blackjack table x takes in $1000 in the drop box and of the $1000 in chips sold the table keeps $300 of them (players walked away with the other $700) then the game's hold is 30%. If every player loses their entire purchase of chips then the hold will be 100%. It is possible for the hold to exceed 100% if players carry to the table chips purchased at another table. A mathematician alone can not determine the hold because it depends on how long the player will sit at the table and the same money circulates back and forth. There is a lot of confusion between the house edge and hold, especially among casino personnel.

The following table shows the average hands per hour and the house edge for comp purposes various games. The house edge figures are higher than those above, because the above figures assume optimal strategy, and those below reflect player errors and average type of bet made. This table was given to me anonymously by an executive with a major Strip casino and is used for rating players.
